Beth Verheyden "Discovery" Workshop (Watercolor)
Paints
- Bring your favorite watercolors and a few colors you’d like to experiment with
- I recommend tubes rather than pans for quick mixing and intensity of color
- White Gouache; any color of white will do
- If you’re curious, here are my own favorites:
o Go-to colors (triad I use most often): Cobalt Blue Hue (Holbein), Winsor Yellow (Winsor Newton), Quinacridone Red (Winsor Newton)
o “Change it up” colors (I use sometimes for fun): Quinacridone Gold (Winsor Newton), Neutral Tint (Holbein), Ocean (Paul Jackson by Davinci), Bright Violet (Holbein)
o Opaque colors: White Gouache (any brand), Cadmium Red Medium (any brand), Cadmium Orange (Winsor Newton or Holbein), Cobalt Teal (M. Graham)

- Stick Charcoal (not a graphite pencil). Charcoal is softer than graphite, and I use it for earthy texture and line-work
Brushes
- Bring your favorites. I use mostly flats (1”, 1-1/2”, 2”, ¾” and ½”) and I prefer black/dark bristles (synthetic, natural or a combination) that have good “bounce back” when wet. Round brushes should have a good point
Paper
- Four - ¼ sheets (11x15), and Two – ½ sheets of 300# paper
o I recommend 300lb. paper, which will allow you to work without the need to stretch ahead of time. This is the best option in a workshop setting
o Please have paper cut or torn to size prior to coming
o If you’re a prolific painter, bring extra paper
o If you’re a “take my time” painter, you may decide to work on 1/8th (7-1/2 x 11) sheets instead If that’s the case, come prepared with four – 1/8th sheets and two – ¼ sheets, or a combination of your choosing.

Miscellaneous
- Copic Sketch Markers in Neutral Gray. N1, N3, N5, N10
- Reference Photos. Bring at least ten black & white photos of subjects you like and would like to paint
o We will be working from black and white photos only
o We won’t be painting all 10 subjects, but you will need them for a specific exercise
o During our study on Composition and Perspective, we’ll be looking at different angles and perspectives of the same subject matter. If you have additional photos of your favorite 10 images which show the subject from a different angle, bring those
o If you prefer to work from memory or sketches, bring at least 10 ideas or sketches
o To save time, you may bring 2-3 subjects already drawn onto watercolor paper. However, our studies may change your thoughts on composition and perspective.

o 1-2 Books that are written using words or phrases that are compelling or meaningful to you
